NAACP Convention Delegates Pass Mississippi Confederate

Flag Resolution

New Orleans-Delegates to the 92nd Annual National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Convention being held in New Orleans, Louisiana voted Tuesday to adopt a resolution to continue supporting efforts to change the current Mississippi state flag.

The resolution reaffirmed measures from 1999 and 2000 condemning the display of the Confederate battle flag and or Confederate emblems from any and all public sites in this country except at historical museums. The resolution also opposed the validation of the referendum vote held on April 17, 2001 that retained the Confederate flag in Mississippi.

Founded in 1909, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is the oldest and largest civil rights organization. Its half-million adult and youth members throughout the United States and the world are the premier advocates for civil rights in their communities, conducting voter mobilization and monitoring equal opportunity in the public and private sectors.

I bring you greetings from the officers and members of the Mississippi State Conference NAACP.

The term Civil Rights is synonymous with the State of Mississippi.  The struggle for civil rights in the state of Mississippi is known all over the world.  We have had some notable civil right leaders such as Medgar Wiley Evers, Aaron Henry, Vernon Damier, and we also have some living legends, C.C. Bryant, Charles Evers, Gilbert R. Mason and many more.

The struggle for freedom, justice, and equality continues.  Join us as a member of the oldest civil right organization in the world.

Let us remember that freedom is not free and justice comes at a price.  We must all play our part in the struggle for justice.
